The Abutilon Page

Abutilons are flowering tropical shrubs related to Hibiscus. Their common name "Flowering Maple" refers to the similarity of the foliage to the Maple family. They are not maples and they are not winter hardy shrubs (a common question). The bell-shaped flowers come in a variety of colours and are produced throughout the year. Many varieties also have colourful foliage, either edged with white or splashed and speckled with yellow.

Plant size and form also vary between varieties, some strive to attain tree-like proportions, while others stay compact and bushy. Some varieties have a wide, sprawling growth habit, and make excellent basket plants.
